It’s a Tool,  Not a Toy

Technology is more simple than ever.  It can finally make your life easier and allow you to be more independent.  Now let’s get down to the specific reasons why technology can help you and is not just a toy.

As we age, our need to remember appointments, follow schedules, participate in therapies, and connect with family and friends grows increasingly more important.  Technology has become the most innovative and supported method to accomplish these necessary tasks.  There are thousands of reminder apps, scheduling calendars, therapy programs, and social media methods out there in the digital world.  These software and applications have made connecting and managing lives a reality.

Going to healthcare appointments, taking medicine on-time, and setting daily schedules is crucial for aging adults to follow.  Neglecting to do so could result in personal harm, unhappiness, and loss of independence.  Using technology as a personal assistant can help remind you of your appointments, cue you to take your medicine on time, and make your daily schedules transparent.

All research indicates that spurring memories with familiar photos, video, music, family voices and other audiovisual materials can keep a mind more active and, most importantly, happier.  Remember those attic boxes, the scrapbooks, the 8mm videotapes, and all those music records?  Those are therapies.  Reminiscence therapy involves looking at photos of happy memories, listening to your favorite music from the good ol’ days, and watching videos of life events and stories.  Simply consolidating all of your mementos digitally and housing them in one spot, on your device, will provide you with one of the best non-drug therapy techniques you’ll ever find, and it’ll be in arms reach.

Connecting with people is another way to stay engaged and happy.  Technology has paved the way for people to be closer to each other without necessarily being in the same room.  Through messaging apps and social media, you can communicate with friends and loved ones.  You can stay connected with them and experience their stories, vacations, and life events as they share pictures and post updates.  Surrounding yourself, whether physically or digitally, with people you care about can significantly improve mood and wellbeing.

So, that’s the deal.  Technology has changed for the better.  Let it help manage and connect your life.  Give it a chance.
